Driving equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) - Join the conversation

Join us on Wednesday 24 November to find out the what, why and who behind the IWFM Public Statement on EDI (equity, diversity and inclusion), published Monday 8 November.

As part of our ambition to have greater diversity and inclusion within the workplace and facilities sector, we have started the conversation with our initial commitment in this area laying the foundations for our public engagement.

To help us get it right for our members and the profession, we asked for the help of 15 volunteers for a Focus Group.

Four of those experienced people - Chris Barnes, Colin Kimber, Marcia Ore and Sharon Slinger - are joining the panel to discuss why it is so important to talk and act for greater equity, diversity and inclusion, what IWFM is doing, how they are helping us, and 'what good looks like' for the profession and the sector. Find out more about our EDI Focus Group on our dedicated webpage here.

Chris Barnes

Senior Account Manager, Pareto Facilities Management

With over 25 years in senior management roles within the FM sector, Chris has vast experience and knowledge working with large and small FM companies. He has been on many D&I committees and is determined to bring neurodiversity to the forefront of the industry and every workspace it reaches.

Since Chris’s official diagnosis, he has been a champion for autism awareness in the workplace, running several campaigns across social media to help educate workplaces and support younger autistic people to get employment in FM.

Chris is an avid runner and regularly takes part in marathons and ultra-marathons.

Sofie Hooper

Head of Policy, IWFM

Sofie leads on the IWFM’s wider policy and public affairs work, helping to raise the voice of the Institute, its members and the wider workplace and facilities management sector. She translates best practice into policy objectives and engages with stakeholders to ensure best practice is taken on board and any concerns affecting workplace and facilities professionals are mitigated.

She covers a wide range of IWFM activities, from skills, impact on society, making better workplaces to challenges of the profession, informing members and external audiences of what matters to the profession, with a view to shaping the political and regulatory environments through external representation at UK and global level.

Coming from the world of consultancy, Sofie has significant experience in developing and implementing public affairs strategies for a wide range of clients including national and international trade associations and alliances as well as corporate clients.

At IWFM, Sofie works closely with members, in particular the special interest groups (SIG), to identify key issues and messages to be taken to government and other external stakeholders relevant to the wider profession.

Colin Kimber

Associate Director, Pareto Facilities Management

Colin has worked in the FM industry for 16 years, both for large and small organisations in customer environments ranging from global corporate headquarters to the public sector, museums to tech giants.

He is currently Associate Director at Pareto FM, a business which places social value at the very forefront of what they do, with supporting inclusion in FM a key part of that strategy. In addition to his operational responsibilities, Colin also leads the HSEQ, L&D and D&I activities for the company, and is very proud to be part of the steering committee for LGBT+ in FM.

Marcia Ore

Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, EMCOR UK

Marcia’s diversity, inclusion and equity journey began when she responded to the Scarman Report following the riots that took place in the UK in 1981.

During her 30-year career, Marcia has held several roles where she challenged the structural barriers to equality, diversity and inclusion which existed in the Police Service.

Since retiring from the Police Service, she has continued being actively involved with diversity, inclusion and equity, particularly relating to race and ethnicity, young people and individuals with disabilities, and women.

Marcia has recently been appointed as the Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at EMCOR UK.
