FACE-TO-FACE: Beyond operational carbon: the importance of embodied carbon plus networking
This is a hybrid event where there is an option to attend in person or online. This event listing is for those that want attend in person. If you would like to attend virtually instead, please click here to register.
Whilst operational carbon is widely recognised and understood with major reductions in operational carbon achieved over the past 30-plus years, embodied carbon now accounts for the larger share of carbon emissions in buildings. Despite this, it retains a much lower appreciation across the industry.
However, reducing the need to build new, whilst simultaneously reusing existing assets, are seen as key pillars of embodied carbon. Therefore, with a focus on the transformation and repurposing of assets, the opportunities to make positive steps in addressing the challenges around embodied carbon have never been greater.
As part of World FM Day’s theme of ‘leading a sustainable future’, IWFM’s International SIG is hosting a Q&A session, where our panellists will address the subject of embodied carbon, and how we all can play a critical role in contributing to the reduction of embodied carbon emissions.
Important:
Doors will open from 5.30pm with a prompt 6pm start. Refreshments will be provided and there will be an opportunity to network afterwards. As spaces are limited, please only book if you fully expect to attend. If your circumstances change and you are no longer able to attend in person, please let us know by contacting [email protected]
Please also be aware that you will be asked to provide proof of a negative lateral flow test to be able to enter the building on the day.

The events of the past few years have shone a spotlight on the challenges that our workplaces are facing. The sudden and unprecedented action of a global workforce retreating from the workplace has accelerated disruption and exposed the true fragility of these workplaces.
For many, focus is now turning to the transformation and repurposing of assets. Be that on a building level responding to environmental, social and economic impacts, or at a cities level as the need to regenerate failing town centres and local economies become ever more critical. When viewed in parallel with the often-quoted statistic that 80% of the building stock needed by 2050 already exists today, are we witnessing a turning point - an opportunity for those in the world of workplace to step forward and lead us into the new normal?
As organisations start to plan for the workplace of the future and align their property footprint and their workplace environment with emerging workplace needs, the transformation and repurposing of their existing assets will form a key strategic consideration for these organisations. For many, this presents an opportunity to drive forward Net Zero Carbon (NZC) ambitions, utilising refurbishment and retrofit programmes to embed a series of NZC interventions across their portfolios that aim to minimise operational carbon emissions. But what are the opportunities beyond operational carbon? Join us to discuss and find out more.
