Climate change, the environment and carbon reduction are - rightfully - at the forefront of the main political parties’ general election campaigns and are set to generate widespread debate throughout the next decade.

With the built environment contributing some 40% of the UK’s carbon emissions, the sector clearly has a major role to play in achieving the current government’s aim of a net zero carbon economy by 2050. Workplace and facilities management professionals are at the frontline of the ‘climate emergency’ and can lead the further changes needed to improve efficiencies throughout the ‘design to occupation’ lifecycle of buildings.

We are therefore asking members to submit their views on two Government consultations, which will help shape new energy efficiency standards in non-domestic private rented buildings and the UK’s housing sector.

In the consultation titled Non-domestic Private Rented Sector minimum energy efficiency standards: future trajectory to 2030, the Government is seeking views on how best to improve the energy performance of buildings in this sector through tighter minimum energy standards.

The consultation on the Future Homes Standard sets out proposals on the energy efficiency requirements for new homes from 2020, in particular changes to Part L (conservation of fuel and power) and Part F (ventilation) of the Building Regulations, leading up to the introduction of the Standard for all new houses by 2025.

Over the coming weeks, we will be gathering the expert views and insight of special interest groups and individuals, including our Sustainability SIG, before we finalise our responses to both consultations in January 2020. Please check our webpages, which we will update with further details on the consultations.
