Maintenance

BSI, the UK’s National Standards Body, is seeking comments on the development of its British Standard for Maintenance in FM (BS8210) code of practice. The closing date for contributions is Sunday, 14 June 2020.

Dr Brian Atkin has been leading the BSI panel reviewing the standard to ensure it remains as valid today as it did originally 30 years ago.

This standard provides recommendations on: taking a business-focused or risk-based approach at strategic and operational levels’ formulating strategies and policies; ensuring that facility assets continue to perform as intended and retain their value; regular and planned maintenance as a value-adding activity; and the importance of occupational health and safety and information management. The standard is also aiming to promote principles such as transparency, audits and verification processes, and a mindset-shift from cost to (social) value and benefits.

BSI has helped to lead on the development of FM standards over many years. Following the release of the ISO Standard for Facilities Management (ISO41001), this review of the Standard for Maintenance in FM encompasses a wide range of areas including procurement, strategy, technology, record-keeping and the scope of work.

To take part in the review and help to shape the new guidance, you will need to complete a short registration form, from which you will be directed to the BS8210 webpage.
