Overview
IWFM, in partnership with Carbon Numbers, released a new and updated Good Practice Guide (GPG) to help organisations tackle climate change and cut waste through effective energy management. Workplace and facilities management (WFM) plays a critical role in achieving organisational sustainability outcomes, but from achieving legal compliance to instituting appropriate policies, challenges abound - even with potentially massive organisational gains.
To enable the profession to make best use of the actionable and exhaustive GPG, IWFM’s Head of Policy & Research, Sofie Hooper, will chair a webinar that will feature the key areas of the GPG and will leverage exclusive insights, perspectives and recommendations from a panel, including Neil Fright and Sunil Shah.
Over the course of the webinar, the GPG author will first outline the improved GPG and then the expert panel will discuss the priorities for WFM in the pursuit of effective energy management, including:
- How to optimise building performance and achieving organisational objectives.
- How to manage internal and external customer demands, from communicating data to demonstrating value to the C-suite.
- How to hit corporate targets, ensuring that energy management positively influences priorities.
- How to balance corporate needs, including strategically managing price risks and reducing energy consumption.
Speakers
Laura Forster
Laura is Innovation Lead on the Net Zero Heat Programme at Innovate UK. Team objectives are to end the use of gas for space and water heating in all buildings, whilst growing UK business. This is being done through innovation in data, technology and processes. Currently, Laura is working with product manufacturers of innovative heat decarbonisation technology to increase their place in the government-backed retrofit market, as well as demand elsewhere. She also supports grant-funded projects that are developing data-driven decision-making tools for heat and power reduction across building portfolios, and others that are increasing access to performance data relating to building fabric.
After time with the Building Performance Network, Laura has a keen interest in building performance evaluation. Her previous experience with the Good Homes Alliance and Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance has given her appreciation of the challenges and massive benefits of improving the sustainability of our built environment.
Neil Fright
An IWFM Fellow, Neil is an Energy Efficiency, Low Carbon, Business Leader who has worked in the sector for more than 20 years. A specialist in Energy Performance Contracting and Net Zero planning, he holds a Master’s degree and is a member of The Energy Management Association, a category judge for the IWFM Impact Awards and an ESOS Lead Assessor.
Sofie Hooper
Sofie Hooper leads on the IWFM’s wider policy and public affairs work, helping to raise the voice of the Institute, its members and the wider workplace and facilities management sector. She engages with stakeholders to ensure best practice is taken on board and concerns affecting workplace and facilities professionals are mitigated.
Covering a wide range of activities and areas, sustainability, workplace and building safety form the core agenda. Sofie has been leading on IWFM’s Building Safety Manager work programme, feeding into the legislative process towards the Building Safety Bill. She provided the Secretariat for the Competence Steering Group’s Working Group 8, which developed the Building Safety Managers competence framework.
In addition to being the co-author of the Group’s report, Safer people, safer homes: Building Safety Management, she is a regular contributor to Facilitate. Building on WG8’s recommendations, Sofie is a part of the Interim Executive of the Building Safety Alliance, a cross sector collaboration which is working to improve holistic building safety competence across the occupation phase. She is also a part of the Steering Committee for the DLUCH sponsored PAS 8673, which is setting the competence specification for Building Safety Managers.
Sunil Shah
Sunil is the founder of Acclaro Advisory, which provides policy, corporate and project support across a wide range of sustainability issues affecting organisations. With 25 years of experience within the built environment, he is uniquely experienced throughout the lifecycle of developments, delivering sustainability solutions at the design, planning and operational stages.
