The Government’s much-anticipated 10-year infrastructure strategy has been officially released, revealing a move towards a longer-term approach to investment in skills, large scale infrastructure and the public estate.

It’s been met with cautious optimism throughout the workplace and facilities management (WFM) sector – a view that’s shared by the industry’s leading professional body, the Institute for Workplace and Facilities Management (IWFM).

According to IWFM CEO Linda Hausmanis: ‘We welcome the publication of the 2025 UK Infrastructure: A 10 Year Strategy today, which sets out the direction of travel for the next 10 years of investment and development.

‘There is much to digest, but regardless of individual measures, organisational performance in any sector will be underpinned by workplace and facilities management. The WFM sector is itself a major contributor to the UK economy representing about 5% of all UK enterprises employing 1.2 million people.

‘Whether maintaining buildings and assets, optimising sustainable outcomes or improving workplace experience our members will be a vital component in the roll out of this strategy for the next decade and beyond.

I hope the forthcoming industrial strategy will lead to a long-term approach that includes a coherent and holistic plan to address the skills crisis that helps deliver the solutions needed to meet the complex challenges we all face – not least achieving net-zero and closing the digital divide.’
