2019 saw our Institute’s first full year as IWFM and it was a period dominated by Brexit and defined by uncertainty.  Though it may have been challenging, it was also exhilarating in many respects as we made significant progress towards our goals, which were captured in our ambitious ten-point plan.

We raised our insights game substantially and, through working with new and established partners, boosted our capability to produce valuable guidance and great content. This includes our ‘Creating better workplaces’ hub in partnership with Ricoh - a one-stop source of workplace essentials and an example of more to come. Partnering also helped to raise our voice outside the profession, affording us platforms on matters including workplace leadership, skills and apprenticeships, better practice on safety and procurement, and making a difference through social value.

We continued to support professional development, helped make facilities management a ‘Career of Choice’, launched a new-look conference, and celebrated success while promoting diversity and inclusion at our wonderful first IWFM awards - all as work continues to develop the core elements of our proposition around our professional standards.

To ensure we are an Institute fit for purpose in the digital age, we continued to advance our technological capabilities, completing the re-brand and embedding the systems upgrades we have installed, which have supported improved business efficiency and better customer service. After a modest refurbishment underpinned by principles of ‘spend minimally and act sustainably’, we also created a flexible workplace of which IWFM employees can be proud and for us to practise what we preach.

There is much more I could say and none of it would have been possible without the support of our members and the dedication of our volunteers. I hope you keep that in mind as you read through the pages of the Annual Review 2019 and reflect with us on an eventful, exciting and productive year.
