IWFM is encouraging members to engage with an open consultation on a new BSI PAS (Publicly Available Specification): Design for the Mind - Neurodiversity and the Built Environment.
The consultation covers both building design and management, including many aspects of the built environment for which workplace and facilities management professionals are responsible and which can make a huge difference to those who experience sensory anxiety or overload. Its timing is particularly significant given that many organisations are reassessing their workplace and workforce policies and requirements in a post pandemic world.
The PAS seeks to establish the first guidance standards in this field, covering features such as site and building layout; wayfinding; external spaces and access to nature; MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing); acoustics and noise management; light, lighting and reflection; surface finishes; fixtures, fittings and furniture.
Primary aims of the guidance are to:
- influence workplace design and management to reduce the potential for sensory overload, anxiety or distress
- provide users with some flexibility and choice to meet a spectrum of sensory requirements
- offer restorative spaces to reset and recover from sensory overload, anxiety or distress.
A significant number of people find certain aspects of the built environment uncomfortable, distressing, or a barrier to their use, with adverse effects on their physical and mental health. Recognising such neurological diversity and taking steps to reduce or eliminate potential negative impacts can help to create comfortable workplaces where everyone can flourish equally. The benefits of creating a sensory inclusive environment include enhanced employee and customer retention, reduced absence, enhanced wellbeing, and improved performance and productivity.
PAS 6463: Design for the Mind - Neurodiversity and the Built Environment is free to download or read on the BSI website via this link (an email address is required to register). The closing date to submit comments is Thursday, 4 November 2021.
