Today is National Mentoring Day – a chance to spotlight the value of mentoring and the positive impact it has across our profession. At IWFM, our mentoring programme continues to be a vital resource for workplace and facilities management professionals at all stages of their careers. Whether you're just starting out or looking to give back, mentoring offers a unique opportunity to grow, connect and contribute.
For mentees: confidence, clarity and career direction
For those seeking guidance, the IWFM Mentoring programme provides a safe and supportive space to explore challenges, set goals and gain perspective. Tom Maddock is an estate manager in his first WFM role. His mentor is a Director of estates. Tom said: ‘We explored my current role and where I want my career to progress. Together, we identified areas I want to develop and built a plan to work on. Having a relationship where you can share ideas, ask questions, and learn from someone with experience is incredibly valuable – especially when you’re new to the industry.’
Mentoring isn’t just about advice – it’s about empowerment. Mentees benefit from the experience and insight of someone who’s walked the path before them, helping them navigate decisions, build resilience and develop professionally.
For mentors: giving back and growing too
Mentors often say they gain just as much from the experience as their mentees. Sarah Hotchen, managing director of NG Bailey Facilities Services, said: “There was a moment during a conversation where my mentee challenged the way we’d always done something – and they were absolutely right. It made me stop and think, “Why do we do it that way?” That kind of fresh perspective is invaluable.’
Mentoring is a chance to give back to the profession, share knowledge and help shape the future of WFM. It also fosters deeper listening, empathy and a renewed sense of purpose.
A shared journey
The IWFM Mentoring programme is built on mutual respect, trust and shared learning. It’s not about having all the answers – it’s about creating space for honest conversation and growth. As Sarah Hotchen put it, “It’s a two-way street. We both learn, we both grow.”
On National Mentoring Day, we celebrate all those who have taken part in the scheme – mentors and mentees alike. Your commitment to learning, sharing and supporting others is what makes our profession stronger.
If you’re thinking about joining the scheme, now is a great time. Whether you’re looking for guidance or ready to offer it, mentoring could be the next step in your professional journey.
