As the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, interest in the real Living Wage remains strong.

While National Minimum Wage laws aim to ensure a basic standard of living, they often fall short, leaving workers in a sector like workplace and facilities management (WFM) struggling to meet their daily needs as the cost of living has, to date, not been considered in the methodologies setting the rate.

The real Living Wage, as calculated by the Living Wage Foundation, on the other hand, ensures that workers can afford essentials like food, housing and transportation, while allowing for some discretionary spending.

As a member of the Recognised Service Provider Leadership Group, we have been feeding into the development of a new Living Wage toolkit which is targeted at service providers. It highlights topics such as the history of the real Living Wage, social value and wider sustainability outcomes, how to get accredited as a Living Wage Employer and more.

In the words of our CEO and contributor to the toolkit's foreword, Linda Hausmanis, the Living Wage is the ‘right thing to do to build a fairer society.’

Additionally, through a case study and research, the guidance highlights the positive impact the real Living Wage makes on the 15,000 accredited Living Wage Employers, making a powerful case for change alongside the practical steps organisations can take.

IWFM hope organisations find the guidance useful and practicable; as the foreword says, ‘let’s realise the difference we can make, one contract at a time.’
