We are saddened at the passing of Honorary Fellow of the Institute, Geoff Gidley FIWFM.
Leading the tributes from IWFM, CEO Linda Hausmanis said:
‘I was greatly saddened to hear of the loss of Geoff. He was a key player both in the development of the facilities management profession and in engineering the existence of the Institute that stands today.
‘I know Geoff will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him at IWFM and its predecessor organisations. In offering sincere condolences to his family and friends I hope that the knowledge of Geoff’s important legacy will bring some comfort at this sad time.’
Geoff was the last chairman of the Association of Facilities Managers (AFM) where he played a major part in the merger of the AFM with the Institute of Facilities Management (IFM). This culminated in the formation in 1993 of the British Institute of Facilities Management, IWFM’s former name. As Chair of the BIFM Professional Standards and Education Committee he was closely involved in the development of the first BIFM qualification and setting the fundamental competencies for facilities management that survive today.
Longtime friend and Honorary Fellow Derek Paxman who maintained contact with Geoff over the years recalled that in addition to Geoff’s prominence as Chair of the Institute at the time of merger he was a highly respected professional in Courtauld’s as Director of FM.
‘He was always very interested to hear news about IWFM,' remarked Derek, 'and never lost his interest in facilities management.’
