Sustainability: UK Government reaffirms commitment to achieve net zero by 2050

Despite the distractions of COVID-19 and Brexit, the UK Government has announced plans to publish a ‘comprehensive’ net zero strategy ahead of next year's COP26 climate summit.

This follows the annual progress report from the Committee on Climate Change, the Government’s independent climate advisors, which warned that little progress had been made towards the net zero target.

The Government also confirmed that it will publish its heat and buildings strategy later this year, as one of the key components of its overall decarbonisation strategy. We expect that this will outline a clear framework of actions and priorities to help FM professionals meet the challenges of carbon emission reduction.

This is already a key focus for many in our sector according to our latest Sustainability Survey, with nearly two-thirds (63%) of businesses in the workplace and FM sector already being measured on their carbon/energy management (the second highest category across the sustainability agenda).
