From the front line to the C-suite, digital innovation is transforming workplace and facilities management, enabling professionals to boost productivity, improve efficiency, cut costs and enhance the customer experience. However, aspects such as fragmented data and the difficulty of sourcing employees with digital skills create challenges to harnessing the benefits of innovation, creating a digital divide.

Organisations which are digitally mature gain a competitive edge by effectively responding to and acting on technology-driven developments, allowing them to add value. A new Guidance Note published by IWFM and Planon, ‘A digital maturity pathway for smart(er) organisations’, presents a strategic approach for organisations to work towards digital maturity and embed it into their future. Innovation doesn’t just entail platforms and processes, but also factors such as broader strategy, engagement, training and culture. Travelling the digital maturity roadmap will position organisations for long-term success and a re-imagining of the service scope, value and positioning.

In preparation for the journey, organisations should set out what they want to achieve on the pathway to digital maturity, considering any potential risks and assessing the organisation’s status. From there, planning can begin, determining metrics, milestones and ways to judge success. This necessitates engaging teams through communication, training and gradual changes in processes and technology. It’s recommended to begin with small-scale projects before gradually scaling up, analysing outcomes and making changes as required. Lastly, evaluation is necessary to keep change going, factoring in long-term sustainability and proactive steps to build on progress.

Speaking on behalf of IWFM, Sofie Hooper, Head of Policy & Research, commented: “This Guidance Note is a great blueprint for organisations keen to derive all the benefits available to them in the real world by providing a comprehensive framework to take advantage of all that data and technology have to offer. While at times this digital world seems impenetrable, we must remember that it is firmly rooted in people, process and information, so that the best possible business decisions can be made across wide ranging outcomes, such as sustainability, building safety, workplace productivity and more”.

On the launch of the report, Erik Jaspers, Global Product Strategy Director, Planon, and IFMA Fellow, stated:

“We’re delighted to help members with their digital transformation initiatives by partnering with IWFM to create this Guidance Note. The document will be a valuable resource for any FM organisation wishing to improve its digital maturity level.”
