The Building Safety Act 2022 is a significant development for workplace and facilities management (WFM), creating a new system of regulatory compliance for higher-risk buildings, intending to enhance safety and accountability. Recently, IWFM’s South West Region invited keynote speakers and professionals to gather for an event in Plymouth, where attendees could learn about the Act, its impacts on building controls and how the Act could be implemented on a practical project.

Offering insight on the day were Paul Chapple, Chartered Architectural Technologist at Bailey Partnership (Consultants) LLP; Paul Armstrong, Technical Director at Cook Brown; and Mike Smith, Director and Practice BIM Manager at Bailey Partnership. The speakers delved into a range of aspects of the Act, including the context for its creation, the new roles and responsibilities the Act mandates, the Golden Thread and more. Attendees also had the opportunity to network and engage with their local Region, led on the day by Mark Bullard.

Following the event, IWFM recommends that attendees and non-attendees alike engage with the resources provided, including the event’s slide deck, courses including Building Safety Act: what FMs need to know and do and Competence, leading to Organisational Capability: Methodologies for Evidencing Organisational Capability, plus the recently updated Fire safety management in 2024: what you need to know

IWFM South West Region would like to thank everyone that attended and helped make the event informative, engaging and productive.
