What we’ve reported on

As is often the case, September has so far given us plenty to consider. We’ve seen a flurry of contract wins by big names like Amey, ISS, Mitie, Pinnacle Group and The Clean Space, to the quieter but no less important conversations about workplace inclusion, recent weeks have shown the breadth of what FM delivers.

We also highlighted Association for Project Management research finding that workplace adjustments for neurodivergent staff are paying dividends: almost every organisation surveyed (98.8%, no less) reported measurable benefits from steps like structured routines, sensory-friendly spaces and flexible hours.

Elsewhere, economic realities appear to be chipping away at organisations’ Net zero commitments. Many UK businesses are unlikely to meet their deadlines, hampered by cost pressures, lack of technology, and a shortfall in training and guidance.
Add to that a sobering report from the British Safety Council showing a clear perception gap between employers and employees when it comes to workplace wellbeing provision — and it’s clear there’s much still to do.

Then there’s recruitment: an FM service built on expertise and long-standing relationships is, we’re told, often drifting towards transactional, volume-driven hiring. In the process, we risk losing the very specialist knowledge that has always set this sector apart.

What we’re working on

Our attention is on the IWFM Impact Awards – not least because this year marks the 25th anniversary of the industry’s most prestigious event. In support of our print edition feature you’ll see more stories exploring how far the profession has come and where it’s headed next. We’re also looking into the growing role of WFM professionals in masterplanning estates – a space traditionally dominated by architects and developers, but increasingly influenced by the operational insight only FM professionals can provide. If you’ve had such a role, we’d be really keen to understand your experiences.

If you read one Facilitate piece…

The change in IWFM chair from Mark Whittaker to Andrew Hulbert is significant, with the board working on its next five year strategy. We spoke to both men, putting the change of chair into context with IWFM’s recent past and projected future. This one is exclusive to members in the print edition or, if you’ve opted in, via our digital edition.
