In its response to the Home Office consultation on fire safety, the Government announced that, before drawing up legislation, it wants to look again at the recommendations made by the Grenfell Tower Inquiry on the ‘complex issue’ issue of personal emergency evacuation plans (PEEPs) for residents of high-rise buildings.

This followed BSI’s withdrawal - pending a review - of its new code of practice on fire risk after the family of one of the victims of Grenfell threatened legal action against the Government.

Martin Ryan, a fire and facilities management consultant, and a member of IWFM’s Life Safety Working Group, gives his views on the contentious issues surrounding PEEPs and the ongoing challenges for the fire safety profession.
