This week IWFM hosted a roundtable with a number of the UK’s top FM service providers.

Institute Chair, Andrew Hulbert FIWFM, who led the face to face session in the City of London, was joined by senior leaders from ten organisations from the £108 Bn sector.

The rules were “Chatham House” to facilitate an open exchange of views and the group – uniquely together - was able to work through the many positives as well as some of the real challenges being faced by an industry whose value-add to the UK economy in 2023 was £65 Bn – more than tourism, advertising and food and drink.

Attendees were active in contexts that ranged from prisons to nuclear power plants and while experiences varied, many were shared. Topics included the familiar question of cost versus value (see above), the procurement process including the value of trusting relationships. Most had a perspective on the employer NICs increase at Budget 24, last week reconfirmed until 2031, and how they were working through its consequences. The conversation touched on the sector’s future as a chosen path, its appeal to apprentices and graduates. It also covered organisational capability, including how FM can and is influencing positive outcomes for client organisations across the economy – an area these leaders know can make a difference. We also received feedback on the perception of the Institute from the group and what they would value from IWFM membership going forward.

We’re looking forward to a similar discussion with client side representatives in the new year so do get in touch with Andrew Hulbert or Neil Everitt if you’d like to be part of it. We’d love to hear your perspectives.
