Just ahead of the festive recess, the government has published its anticipated consultation on the Single Construction Regulator – the announcement marks a significant milestone in the government’s response to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry. The reforms aim to tackle fragmentation in the regulatory system and strengthen competence across building and fire safety in line with the aspirations of the Building Safety Act.

As workplace and facilities professionals, we have an important voice in the safe occupation of buildings and our input is crucial, alongside the wider pool of built environment and protective services professionals being consulted.

The consultation itself can be found here, and has a closing date of the 20 March 2026. There is an online response form to capture your insight, so please take the time to contribute.

IWFM will be taking this opportunity to evidence the central role WFMs have in making sure our buildings are safe for their occupants, and we are convening an expert panel to work through the consultation in early January in order to develop a response on behalf of our members. We are working with the Construction Industry Council to highlight and reflect on broader industry implications.

The timeline for the consultation outlines that, for professions;

‘Government will publish a call for evidence in spring 2026 to seek detailed views on targeted proposals for reform, building on the findings of earlier consultations on building control and architects. We will then publish an overarching strategy for the built environment professions in spring 2027.’

IWFM will be reaching out in the new year for further engagement and insight. If you would like to share your thoughts on the consultation, in confidence, to inform the Institute’s response, please get in touch at [email protected]
