World Environment Day 2025. How WFM should be spearheading the workplace sustainability agenda

Workplace and facilities managers (WFMs) are on the frontline as organisations everywhere work to deliver on their net zero commitments. But we’re still not playing a large enough role in the push for sustainability.
That’s problematic, given the unique influence our experts could be exerting on decarbonisation efforts, resource and waste manage, service procurement and building management – and it’s something IWFM believes needs to change.
Buildings are responsible for nearly 40% of global energy-related carbon emissions, but only around half of WFMs are playing active roles in drawing up plans around carbon reduction. And with this year’s World Environment Day focus on plastic pollution – with all its implications for waste management and supply chain oversight – the case has never been greater for WFM representation at the highest level, as sustainability remains a core priority for organisations around the world.
As World Environment Day 2025 calls attention to the crisis – shining a light on past failures and recognising some remarkable progress – IWFM is continuing with our mission to position our industry at the front and centre of the workplace sustainability agenda.
Because of our frontline position, the WFM community needs to be at the very heart of the debate. That will only happen if we build a stronger voice, grow greater skills and expertise – and develop the professional recognition that comes with them.
So it’s more important than ever that you lend your expertise to the IWFM Sustainability Survey 2025, in partnership with Equans, which will help us to build that profile and to campaign for our industry.
And as an IWFM member, whose career may be defined by the sustainability initiatives that you drive, you should take advantage of the training and professional development opportunities that your membership offers.

IWFM members also have access to an extensive information hub including Good Practice Guides and a toolkit to help you develop a holistic net zero strategy. Full details here.
