Overview
The percentage of UK gross domestic product attributed to facilities management services – both in-house and outsourced – stands today at around 8%. It’s a dazzling, monumental statistic but, actually, nothing particularly new. The figure was remarkably similar back in 2012.
So we can safely say that, for at least the past decade, FM has comprised an eighth of the UK’s economic output. The question is: as a sector, are we making the most of it? And as practising FMs, are you receiving the level of credit and recognition surely commensurate with the part you play in our country’s national performance?
Assuming ‘no’, we’ll move on. Because my point is more about what this chunky share of GDP should mean for the sector’s opportunity to oversee much of the meaningful commercial and social change to which our governments so frequently aspire.
