The first recommendation of Phase 2 of the inquiry into the Grenfell Tower tragedy was ‘to create a single construction regulator to reduce fragmentation in how the construction sector is regulated and drive cultural change within the industry.’
In December 2025, the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government announced a consultation on the creation of that regulator. IWFM has now responded on behalf of our members and the workplace and facilities profession.
A crucial role for workplace and facilities managers
The workplace and facilities management sector has a crucial role to play in the safety of buildings. As the key overseers of maintenance throughout the lifecycle of the building, facilities management professionals are central to the safe and effective performance of the buildings they manage.
Member feedback is clear that workplace and facilities managers should have a voice in how the construction process can be assured. The facilities management sector's zone of control is ensuring that what is being and has already been delivered or occupied is fit for purpose and is maintained throughout its life in line with best practice.
The role of FM goes beyond the traditional 'construction' sector and combines unique insight around materials, facilities and data that are essential components of building and therefore public safety.
IWFM will continue to work with MHCLG and other stakeholders to highlight the essential work undertaken by our members and the sector more broadly.
