Jake Drummond FIWFM’s journey into facilities management began with a single step – one that would ultimately lead him to senior leadership in the civil service and a seat on the IWFM Board. His story is a powerful example of how IWFM Studying membership can shape not just careers, but professional identity.
A starting point with impact
‘I hadn’t heard of IWFM before I started my studies,’ Jake recalls. ‘So the fact that I was able to get Studying membership whilst I took those first steps into the qualification world was very beneficial.’ That early connection gave him the confidence to think beyond his current role and begin imagining a future in the profession..
Insight through industry media
Jake found particular value in Facilitate Magazine which offered a window into how other organisations approached FM. ‘It gave me great insight into what was happening in other areas of the sector and allowed me to compare,’ he says. ‘It was the first time in my career I'd been able to do that.’
A career transformed
The impact of IWFM qualifications was profound. ‘Absolutely – the changes have been transformative,’ Jake shares. ‘The qualification gave me the springboard to progress from site-based roles into senior leadership.’ Today, he serves as Deputy Government Head of Property Profession at the Cabinet Office and sits on the IWFM Board. ‘I’ve had multiple promotions, led national programmes, and built the confidence to represent the profession at the very highest levels of government.’
Membership that evolves with you
Now a Fellow of IWFM, Jake sees his membership as a dynamic part of his professional life. ‘It’s about profile, credibility, and influence – being part of a recognised professional body that champions standards, learning, and thought leadership.’ He values the opportunity to give back through mentoring, policy work, and bridging public and private sector practice.
Advice for the next generation
Jake’s message to those considering membership renewal after completing a qualification is clear: ‘Don’t think of membership as just a box you tick while you’re studying – it’s an investment in your career long after you’ve qualified.’ For him, IWFM has been the constant thread running through his journey – from student to senior leader. ‘Renewing isn’t about paying fees, it’s about staying part of a professional community that opens doors, builds credibility, and connects you with opportunities you simply wouldn’t get on your own.’

Reflecting on his early days, Jake offers this advice: ‘Studying membership might feel like just the first step – but don’t underestimate the power of that step.’ It gave him a sense of belonging and laid the foundation for everything that followed. ‘Take it seriously, use the resources, and lean into the professional identity it gives you. Ten years down the line you’ll look back and realise it was the start of something much bigger than you thought.’
