The draft Building Safety Bill, which builds on the recommendations of Dame Judith Hackitt’s Review into the Grenfell Tower fire, is set to bring about fundamental changes to the building and fire safety regimes.

A key part of the legislation will be the creation of the first statutory role that falls within the facilities management remit: the Building Safety Manager (BSM).

In a newly released podcast by the Fire Protection Association (FPA), IWFM’s Head of Policy, Sofie Hooper, joined the FPA’s Howard Passey to discuss the BSM role and: how facilities managers can prepare to fulfil its requirements; why greater education, awareness and training is needed; what makes an individual ‘competent’; and what steps those responsible for fire safety should be taking to minimise the risk for themselves, others and the organisation. This includes the role of fire risk assessments, the facility manager's role in acting on recommendations, and the need for a clear and robust fire strategy.
